What does it cost to have a Midwife?

These prices are what midwives in the Cape Town Area charge, and there may be slight variations between practices. Midwives in any other areas please feel free to contact us if you would like to show your price structures for your part of the country. Codes quoted are for medical aid claims.

INITIAL ANTENATAL VISIT: (1 1/2 hours)

ROUTINE ANTENATAL VISIT: (30 min)
Code: 88420     R160.00-R180.00 per visit

EMERGENCY CALL-OUT FEE: (min 1 Hr)
Code: 88406     R250.00

ANTENATAL HOME VISIT: (1 hrs)
Code: 88420, 88003     R250.00

DEPOSIT: a deposit is required from all clients at 36 weeks
R2500.00-4000.00 (of birth fee)

HOSPITAL BIRTH - GLOBAL OBSTETRIC FEE / LABOURS RESULTING IN CAESAREAN SECTION: Includes labour monitoring and support, regardless of the number of hours spent with the client before or after the birth.
The hospital and obstetrician if required will charge additional fees - please clarify the amounts with the hospital that you have chosen.

HOME BIRTH - GLOBAL OBSTETRIC FEE: Includes labour monitoring, regardless of the number of hours spent with the client before or after the birth.

POSTNATAL HOME VISITS: An average of 3-4 visits are done (min 1 Hr)
Code: 88421     R250.00 per visit

DISPENSARY: Materials used for homebirths are calculated per item and varies per birth

PHOTOTHERAPY LIGHTS: Hire thereof per day
Medical Aid will pay for a maximum of 3 days.

Code:88405     R200 -400.00 per day

PLEASE NOTE:
Midwives do not charge Medical Aid Rates. Their rates are based on the fact that, in order to ensure best possible care, they take on a limited number of clients a month. It is necessary to check with your particular Medical Aid to establish what percentage they cover.
