The Art of Expressing Breastmilk

Oct 22 2007

Well the time has come for you to have to go out somewhere other than remaining within the confines of your home and possibly without your baby this will feel either completely daunting, an absolute relief or a strange mixture of both.

So, it's time to express this might seem easier said than done.
Don't feel alone in your absolute ignorance of not knowing where to start. You are only just getting the hang of breastfeeding and you've never done this before.
Many women come in to clinics or phone their midwives at various times in the first year trying to learn the ropes of expressing. So here are a few tips to help you unravel the mysteries of expressing. We hope you find them helpful, and pass them on to friends and relations, why struggle when others have gone through the struggle and can pass the info on to you.

Breastfeeding Basics

Check that your baby is latching properly (checklist: nose and chin touching breast, baby lying tummy to tummy, listen for swallowing sounds, ear wiggle visible, initial twinge then becomes comfy, breasts feel softer after feed. baby satisfied after feed, wet and dirty nappies)

Drink loads of fluids- water and jungle juice.
Try a complete rest in case you have been overdoing it. Go to bed with your baby + a good book and eat, sleep and read for a day or two.

Eat well- you need 3 good meals a day + snacks.

A Step towards Sanity

The first few weeks after having a baby often feel like a bit of a blur, a muddle of feeding changing and sleeping. During this time, when your baby cries it is a good idea to presume hunger and to feed her. By doing this you achieve two things: your baby learns that when she cries, her needs are met, and by feeding frequently you are able to establish a good milk supply.

Once you have established your milk supply, you can look at spacing feeds a bit. This routine is a basic suggestion of how you can make your day a bit easier for yourself.
